Event description

Description

Join the Cantus Ensemble and the Academy of St Mary-le-Bow for an evening of two Easter masterpieces from opposite ends of the choral spectrum.

J.S. Bach's Christ lag in Todes Banden (Christ lay in death's bonds) is one of the great composer's earliest church cantatas, and his first known attempt at the vivid word-painting that came to define his later oevre. Based on Martin Luther's hymn of the same name, it is a bold, innovative piece of musical drama with a focus on the central fourth stanza depicting the struggle between life and death.

James Macmillan is one of the UK's greatest living composers, and the Cantus Ensemble is proud to name him as Honorary Patron. His cantata Seven Last Words from the Cross follows Christ’s final utterances at the Crucifixion, meditating on each to form a dramatic and emotional sequence.

The Cantus Ensemble and the Academy of St Mary-le-Bow join forces in full for the very first time, in what promises to be an evening of high drama and emotional comtemplation, combining two pillars of the choral canon in one dramatic performance.
