Description

Seven Perspectives brings together seven respected painters, each with a unique vision.

Bath-based artist Peter Brown, affectionately dubbed “Pete the Street”, is widely known for his depictions of street scenes and landscapes. From Barcelona to Britain, he loves capturing the bustle and energy of city streets in his distinctive, Impressionistic style.

Also displaying Impressionist influences is Andrew Douglas-Forbes, whose paintings of the people, old cottages and streets of Wales have marked him out as a poetic champion of Welsh country life and the faded, variegated beauty of its old buildings.

Pursuing a similar theme is Pontardawe-based Mike Jones. The son of a miner, he grew up in the Swansea Valley and many of his paintings recall the mining life that surrounded him as a child. He also loves to paint the elderly, especially former miners or steelworkers and their wives; seeking these figures out at bus stops and in cafes, he furtively sketches them to fuel his painting when he returns home.

While Mike Jones has a passion for people, exhibitor Euan McGregor loves the spaces between land and sea, and travels the UK in search of them. His influences include the St Ives School, Ivon Hitchens, Keith Vaughn and Milton Avery, and he is interested in mid 20th century British landscape painting and printmaking.

Another respected landscape painter is north Wales-based watercolourist William Selwyn, whose works reveal an equal fascination with the coastline of Gwynedd and the people who live and work there. The winner of a number of coveted art prizes and a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, he pushes the challenging medium of watercolour into new territory.

Exhibitor Peter Wileman shares this fascination with the coastline, especially the liminal land and seascapes of East Anglia, which lead him to create deeply evocative pieces dwelling on the qualities of light.

The exhibition is completed with a selection of works by Sir Kyffin Williams RA – arguably one of Wales’ finest painters of the last century.

“Kyffin’s vision of the people and scenery of North Wales still feels as fresh and bracing as ever, and I’m delighted to be able to include him in this show,” said gallery owner and Kyffin’s former agent Mary Yapp. “His work perfectly completes this exceptional display of talent.”
