About this session
This session is designed for teachers and support staff who work with young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD). It provides practical strategies to enhance learning and development.
During the session we will explore the three primary areas of need for young people with SLD:
- Cognition and Learning
- Communication and Interaction
- Sensory
In the session you will learn how to implement structured approaches and visual supports to improve engagement and learning outcomes for pupils with SLD.
By the end of the session, you will be equipped with practical strategies to support young people with SLD effectively.

Nikki Trye
This session is presented by Nikki Trye. Nikki has taught in SEN schools (SLD) for over 20 years.
She was the Assistant Headteacher of a large all aged SEN School in Essex, a Specialist Leader of Education and the Teacher in Charge of a Pupil Referral Unit in Thurrock. She has taught young people with complex needs across all ages (3-19).
Nikki has experience liaising with the LA SEND team regarding consultations, provision, outcomes and category of need for young people with complex needs.
