About this event

Join expert pattern maker and sewing tutor Alison Wesley for a wonderful workshop in which she will show you how to cut out and sew a pair of original, contemporary-design dungarees.

This is a great workshop for those keen to build their confidence in cutting out and sewing garments and learning how to make clothes that fit well.

So that everyone can choose a lovely fabric that suits their taste, we ask you to bring your own fabric and matching thread to the class. You will need approximately 2 metres** of fabric and a matching thread. You should look for a medium weight woven fabric that is not too stiff or heavy. A soft linen would be ideal. Avoid jersey fabric! If you are unsure about material, please ask for advice at your fabric shop when purchasing your fabric.

We recommend Guterman All-sew thread.

It is best, if possible, for you to wash and iron your chosen fabric ahead of the class, as many fabrics shrink when washed.

** If you take a larger dress size, please double check with your fabric shop when buying your fabric, as you may need to buy a little more than 2 metres (just let them know you will be making a pair of dungarees with pockets).

To assist Alison in drafting patterns for your dungarees, please let us know by emailing april@yorkshirecrafthouse.com as soon as possible your UK dress size, waist measurement and hip measurement.

You are welcome to use our sewing machines and equipment to make your dungarees but can bring along your own machine if you prefer.

An excellent class for anyone wanting to gain confidence with garment making and machine sewing - the beginning of an exciting journey into creating your own clothes (that fit!).

Cost: £70 - includes equipment use.

Skill Level: Suitable for beginner garment makers (but you DO need to have used a sewing machine previously and be reasonably confident at machine sewing) as well as more skilled sewing enthusiasts looking for a new project.

(Trying on your dungarees - remember you will need to try your dungarees on, so we suggest wearing a long or short sleeved t-shirt, to ensure you get a realistic view of how your dungarees will look when you wear them).

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
