Approximate course length:

2 hours per week for 6 weeks

This course is for:

Anyone who wants to learn the basic of sewing and for the more skilled, this course is for all abilities.

Sewing encourages mindfulness and reduces stress and anxiety and can also increase positivity and feelings of relaxation.

You will learn:

How to use a sewing machine, thread it up and how to correct minor faults. You will learn how to read the back cover of a commercial sewing pattern, so you know how much fabric to buy and what accessories [zip, buttons, etc]. How to use and understand a commercial pattern to make your own garment.

Alterations to a garment (take in, shorten etc.).

Adult and childrens clothes

Home furnishings such as, curtains, cushion covers, basic blinds

Patchwork and quilting

Soft toys

Tote bags/shoe bags

Memory cushion/ memory quilt

Get inspired to reuse and recycle fabric in a fun and creative way.

This is a classroom based course which will provide an opportunity to develop your sewing skills in a friendly, sociable environment.

You will be given the support you require for your individual development at your own pace.

There are no exams or formal assessments. There will be chance to ask questions and put what you have learned into practice.

Your tutor will give you feedback during the course and you will be able to self-assess.

Work outside of the sessions:

This is not required, though we hope you will want to put what you have learned into practice.

Additional costs and what to prepare:

You will need a pen and paper, laptop or tablet so that you can make your own notes. Handouts may be provided.

For the first session bring along any materials, patterns and sewing equipment you may have as appropriate for your project. If you are not sure where to start or what project you would like to do then you can discuss this with the tutor.

Some materials will be available to you, but a small charge may apply.

Progression from this course:

You may wish to progress to the next 6 week Sewing crafts for pleasure and wellbeing course where you can further develop your sewing skills.

Course fees explained

Some of our courses are free of charge. Others have a full fee and a lower ‘concessions’ rate for those on certain benefits. This may vary from course to course so please ask when enquiring about a particular course. For many of our learning for leisure courses we use three different fee bands:

Fee A: Full fee

Fee B: Derbyshire Gold cards holders

Fee C: Concessions for those on certain benefits/allowances – details are on our Paying for your learning page.

There may be additional costs on some courses for materials please ask for details.

If selecting one of the reduced rates, you will be asked to show proof of entitlement when attending course.

Booking:

A booking fee is charged by Eventbrite for each booking, this is retained by Eventbrite. Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service receive the course fee.

Refunds:

If you are no longer able to attend a course, we may be able to refund the course cost up to 7 days before the course start date minus approximately 10% to cover costs incurred by us.

We reserve the right for refunds to be issued by cheque.
