Class Description
Crewelwork Embroidery, also known as Jacobean, is a traditional embroidery technique associated with the 16th and 17th Centuries. In this two-session workshop you will learn some of the history of the technique and a selection of the traditional stitches. You will be working towards creating a sampler depicting a Hellebore flower. Crewel work designs are almost always taken from nature. You will be using silk threads on silk Dupion, this is quite fine work so some stitching experience is useful, but not essential.
Each session will focus on different stitches, gradually building up your skills. In session one we focus on the left side of the design using chain stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, fly stitch, and creating spider wheels. Session two focuses on the right half, seeding, buttonhole stitch, and how to use satin stitch in a more complex shape. As well as adding a touch of gold to your work.
