SEWING MACHINE BASICS - Saturday 11th August 2018
Event Information
Description
Sewing Machine Basics is ReTweed’s most popular sell-out workshop. Each time we’ve run this session it has sold out within days so book quickly to secure your space.
Feel the Fear and Sew Anyway
This workshop demystifies the inner working of a sewing machine, holding first-time or novice sewers by the hand and showing the easiest ways to get the most from their machine.
Become part of growing "Make Your Own" culture
With the resurrection of 'make do and mend' culture, interest in learning how to master a sewing machine has soared. Although 100s more sewing machines are sold each week – a lot of them are gathering dust as folk seem to be terrified of the technology!! In this workshop, our tutor for this class Jill Harrison will provide a hands-on guide for beginners. Jill is an experienced tutor with extensive sewing experience and runs her own very successful creative business.
What will you learn on the day
This workshop starts with an essential overview of the sewing machine, learning how to thread it and wind bobbins, understanding tension, which threads to use, which needles sizes and which feet to choose along with troubleshooting common problems. There's some guidance on the basic sewing kit you should have, plus advice on which fabrics to choose and basics of cutting out. The workshop includes making an envelope cushion cover and take-home handouts. Participants in this workshop are free to bring along their own sewing machines if they prefer – please let us know in advance if you’d like to do that.
