Event description

Description

Sewing the Seeds is a women’s empowerment initiative of Samugam Trust, a small grassroots organization in Tamil Nadu, India. Since 2012 the project has supported over 130 young, rural mothers and widows each with a sewing
machine plus six months training in sewing. The project addresses a number of important issues that women are faced with in India such as gender and caste discrimination, intergenerational poverty, lack of education and economic dependence. Since the creation of Sewing The Seeds, the women have gained economic independence and have used the money to pay for family needs and their children’s education.

Born out of its success comes Sewing the Seeds 2. The project in its second phase aims to create a social enterprise, targeting the women from the gypsy and tribal villages living on the outskirts of Pondicherry. These are some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised communities in India who have been forced to live by scavenging and begging.
