Come along to our Love Your Clothes - Mend and Repair class with Shirley Gargan!

About this Event

Love Your Clothes: Mend and Repair

This is fantastic way to hold onto garments that have had an accident or are a bit worn out but are worth saving!

We have all had a favourite item of clothing that has come to a premature end because of a burst zip or a ripped seam. This could be a dress, skirt, trousers, jeans, a coat or shirt…the list is endless. Rather than throwing them away, or have them sitting in the wardrobe because we don’t want to part with them, with a little bit of time, patience and know how, it’s possible to fix pretty much any repair to make your garment look good as new.

Our tutor Shirley Gargan has nearly 40 years’ experience as a fully trained seamstress and is keen to share her knowledge and expertise with others. Shirley will pass on some key mend and repair skills and show you the proper techniques, demonstrating how easy it can be to produce ‘good as new’ garments, opening up a whole new world of sewing for you.

What is covered will depend on the repairs and the garments themselves, but we aim to go over:

  • The key principles of repairing garments
  • Understanding the fabric
  • Maintaining garment lines and shape
  • Basic techniques, such as proper unpicking, replacing zips, ripped seams and patching

If you have a sewing machine, bring it along because most people like to work with the machine they’re familiar with, but we have spare machines if you don’t have one. It would be helpful if you let us know beforehand if you need one.

What to bring

Sewing machine, if you have one (let us know if you want to borrow one of ours)

Your choice of garment(s) (we can provide items of clothing if you want something to practice on)

We can advise beforehand on any specific extras you might need to bring with you, such as a new replacement zip

Please note that a garment made of velvet or a stretch fabric take slightly longer to work on (you can still repair these though).

This workshop will take place in our new Sewing Room at Donaldson's School, as part of the Transition Linlithgow Tool Library.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided. Sewing machines can be provided, but we encourage you to bring along your own machine if you prefer. We have some items of clothing for you to practice techniques on, if required.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Look out for our other workshops on our website and Eventbrite profile.
