Event description
Come along to our Patchwork for Beginners class with Esther Anderson, owner of Purely Patchwork!

About this Event

Esther Anderson, owner of Purely Patchwork, will be teaching the techniques of patchwork. This is an ideal class for sewing and patchwork beginners.

Patchwork is a great way to use up or recycle textiles and this class will get you started with some simple patchwork techniques. Have a look around the house for fabrics that you can recycle into a simple bag, such as old shirts, jeans and tops. You can work by hand or machine, but some machining is best for bags for strength. Below is a list of what to bring and there are spare machines if you don’t have one, but you may have to share.

We will have spare equipment, rotary cutters, rulers etc so bring your own if you have them, but again don’t worry, there will be spares to use at the class.

At this class we will cover the following:

  • Safe use of rotary cutting equipment
  • How to cut patchwork shapes with templates and scissors
  • Accurate piecing so that our patchwork shapes fit
  • Simple bag making techniques.

Esther will also show you crazy patchwork and paper piecing shapes such as hexagons which is a great way to use up fabrics and can all be done by hand.

What to Bring:

  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing kit – pins, scissors, paper scissors, spare needles, unpicker
  • Variety of Threads
  • Fabrics – have a look for things that you could give a new lease of life to! Denim such as old jeans are great for bags, also sheets, duvet covers, shirts, curtains and other home textiles.

Fabrics to avoid

You can patchwork with any fabric, but some are much trickier to work with so for your first project don’t make life hard for yourself! Avoid stretchy fabrics such as

T-shirts and baby clothes. Delicate fabrics that are very thin or slippy will probably be quite hard to work with too, but we can make decorations for the bag from them.

If you have any queries about what to bring please contact Esther at:

esther@purelypatchwork.co.uk

This workshop will take place at Purely Patchwork, 43 High St, Linlithgow EH49 7ED.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided. Sewing machines can be provided, but we encourage you to bring along your own machine if you prefer. We have some fabric available, but it's recommend you bring something you want to work with.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Look out for our other workshops on our website and Eventbrite profile.
