Event description
Come along to our Quilting and Finishing for Beginners class with Esther Anderson, owner of Purely Patchwork!

About this Event

CHANGE OF VENUE! Now at Purely Patchwork, 43 High St, Linlithgow ,EH49 7ED

Esther Anderson, owner of Purely Patchwork, will be teaching the techniques of quilting and finishing for beginners. This is an ideal class for sewing and patchwork beginners.

Quilting is where you take layers of fabric and padding and combine them by stitching through all the layers to make a quilted piece. It’s a great way to recycle things like old blankets and fleeces as we need a padded layer in the middle. Some fabrics may be too thick for machine quilting but we will be able to hand quilt them.

At this class Esther will show you hand and machine techniques as well as how to finish the edges with binding. You will be working on a small piece approx 20 inches square (or you can make multiple smaller pieces) which can be made into a cushion front or table mat.

You can work by hand if you prefer. Lots of people love hand quilting and there is some cross over with embroidery, so you can also try some hand embroidery stitches.

At this class we will cover the following:

  • Introduction to hand quilting – running stitch, tying and seeding
  • Introduction to machine quilting – straight lines and decorative stitches.
  • Esther will also demonstrate free machine quilting where you drop the feed dogs and can stitch in any direction.
  • Trimming and binding the edges of a quilted piece.

What to Bring:

  • Sewing machine (if you want to try machine quilting)
  • Sewing kit – pins, scissors, hand needles
  • Variety of Threads for machine quilting
  • Wool/yarn, embroidery floss and/or buttons for tying and hand quilting
  • Marking pencil or chalk marker suitable for fabric
  • Masking tape
  • Fabrics – Lots of different fabrics can be quilted such as sheets, curtains, clothing etc. Bring anything you have and I will have spare fabric and padding for you to use too.

If you have any queries about what to bring please contact Esther at:

This workshop will now take place at Purely Patchwork, 43 High St, Linlithgow ,EH49 7ED
