Sextorical Lectures - Seduction, Scotland & the Law: A Special Relationship

In the 18th century the values of the Scottish Enlightenment mingled with the particularities of Scottish law to create something entirely new: a law to protect women against the dangers of seduction. This Scottish innovation soon spread around the world, with seduction laws implemented or considered in England, Canada, and the United States. Debates about these laws exposed other, more profound debates about class, sexuality, and race that reverberate into the present.

This lecture is part of a series that offers an insight into everything that was traditionally kept behind closed doors. The Sextorical Lectures run on the last Friday of the month at Gladstone's Land and feature experts and academics talking about the history of sex, intimacy and other related topics.
