Shadows-War-Empire workshop and Poppy Retake artist's talk
Event Information
Description
Southern Voices Workshop + Kooj Chuhan Artist's Talk
Southern Voices Workshop:
The 'From the Shadows of War and Empire' exhibition examines the involvement of the British colonies (India, West Indies, Nigeria, and East Africa) in WW1 and the impact the war had on those countries including European imperialism. It illustrates the devastating losses on the colonies’ own ‘home fronts’, and the subsequent development of the independence movements. The workshop will explore our exhibition and research with the aim of offering an objective and balanced account of the war and its impact on colonised people in the Global South than is currently communicated or known. We will interact with images, narratives and histories to unpick the human and political realities involved.
Kooj Chuhan Artist's Talk:
Kooj will give a brief overview of his work and discuss what provoked him to create 'The Poppy Retake'. He will do a tour of the installation and talk firstly about the way that since the so called' Great War' there has been a militaristic culture alongside an economic imperative to continue wars at any cost, and how the racial divides continue to play out. He will then also talk about the role of art and media, and how his own work attempts to use various artistic approaches to intervene.
