Event description

Description

Older readers will remember those halcyon days during the early nineties when lunch time theatre was part of daily life in Galway. Indeed, it was part of the streetscape itself as groups like The Flying Pigs or The Mad Susans, literally, took to the thoroughfares in order to induce the unwary into their dimly lit chamber with their particular brand of magical mischief.

Shakespeare in Connemara sees itself as a direct matrilinear descendent of this marvellous genre. Its theme is how and why Shakespeare came to write his famous Scottish Play, Macbeth. The inspiration for this masterpiece was , of course, Connemara. Where else could it have been? In Shakespeare in Connemara, we follow the playwright's journey, in the company of Mairtín óg MacDonagh, a boatman, as they negotiate a magical cavalcade of treason and conspiracy. Here they encounter women of power who can inflame imagination and desire and, here, Shakespeare has his vision of a great soul being attacked by evil spirits from without. When you really think about it, no place else could have inspired Macbeth.

The show was written by and features Gerry Conneely, himself a veteran of the Lunch Time era along with Neil Bairead and Jacky Roantree.
