Event description
ACTING TOGETHER - New Prison Partnerships Shakespeare on Screen in Prisons Symposium

About this Event

Opening with an exploration of the 6-year partnership between York St John University, HMP New Hall and the Donmar Warehouse Shakespeare Trilogy. The day will explore the potential for new and innovative creative partnerships within the Arts, Higher Education and Criminal Justice System.

Shakespeare on Screen in Prison is a partnership between PCL Productions & York St John University Prison Partnership Project that utilises the world-class Donmar Warehouse Shakespeare Trilogy films nationally, in women’s prisons, following a 6-year collaboration with HMP New Hall & Askham Grange.

An innovative digital & artist led participatory drama project & pedagogy co-created with and by women in prison, Phyllida Lloyd, Trilogy artists & practitioners, York St John University Prison Partnership Project academics and students.

“The whole mission was to represent the voiceless who felt they had no stake in our culture. The screen version of the plays, tries to capture their fury and passion - to give the viewer an experience they could not possibly have had in the theatre. Developing & extending this original mission, to enable more women in prison to have a stake in culture, as participants, co-creators & film audiences, the Shakespeare on Screen in Prison project has witnessed first-hand the transformational power of women’s creative engagement with the Trilogy films in prison.” Phyllida Lloyd
