Shakespeare Workout: Family Ties

From raging patriarchs to rebellious daughters, Shakespeare’s plays are packed with family drama. In this month's in-person workshop, we’ll focus on some of Shakespeare's most iconic plays to explore the weight of familial expectations, reputation and self-determination. What happens when children defy their parents and go their own way?

We will explore Shakespeare's text using active and playful acting exercises. There’s no need to prepare anything in advance and our workshops are suitable for all experience levels.

Following the workshop, there will be an informal Q&A with director Erica Whyman, whose acclaimed work with the RSC (Romeo & Juliet, The Winter's Tale etc) has often explored family relationships, power, and vulnerability. Erica is currently gearing up to direct the stage production of Maggie O'Farrell's Hamnet on a tour of the United States.

Schedule:

3-4.50pm: Workshop with Harry Waller

4.50-5pm: Break

5-6pm: Q&A with Erica Whyman
