Shankill GraveyardTour

By Peter McCabe

Overview

A guided walking tour of Belfast's Shankill Graveyard

This tour lasting less than 90 minutes will feature 20 stops at a range of notable and, in some cases, previously forgotten graves. Headstones will include the Founder of the Belfast Evening Telegraph William Baird, Thomas Moore commemorated as dying ‘for God, King and country’ in 1916, and Reverend Isaac Nelson an Irish patriot, abolitionist, nationalist MP and minister. Stops will also include John Murdoch killed in rioting in the city in 1864, a headstone erected by Robert Dollar ‘in memory of five of his children who died young’, and Walter Ambrose Sterling who died in November 1918 aged 14 whilst serving with the RAF. The tour will also feature the Watch House (used to deter body snatchers) and the headstone of Deputy Harbour Master Alexander Craig who ‘weathered the Battle and the Breeze’ for 79 years.
