About this event

Join us for a Critical Dialogue reflecting on the role of diverse actors engaged in complex humanitarian contexts, in particular the urgent and deteriorating situation in Sudan. With decreasing foreign aid, we have a moral imperative to find alternative solutions to counter the rampant abuse and famine while assessing and mitigating risks. The aim of this session is to examine and explore the current and potentially increasing role of Netherlands-based actors, including the private sector, in responding to humanitarian crises. Recently the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Trade & Development published a Policy Letter emphasizing private sector-led initiatives, specifically in food security and economic resilience in Sudan. This session will reflect on the implications for cross-sectorial collaboration moving forward.

This Dialogue will examine risks and possibilities, including how different kinds of investments and engagement can be coordinated and leveraged, while elevating and building from the existing efforts on the ground in Sudan. The Critical Dialogue aims to engage the diversity of actors in the Hague, a city which convenes a broad ecosystem of actors in peace, justice and humanitarian aid.

The expected outcome of the dialogue is a number of timely and forward-thinking considerations on decision making in response to the situation in Sudan nationally from the perspective of the Netherlands, and in turn influencing international actors. We will record the outcomes of this Dialogue and invite follow-on ideas and engagement.

The panel will convene private sector actors, humanitarian organisations, financial institutions and ministry representatives to discuss risk assessment and in humanitarian crises focusing on Sudan.

Facilitated dialogue

Through facilitated dialogue and breakouts the participants will engage in further critical discussions assessing risk within their roles, envisioned partnerships based on Dutch policy brief.

Intended target group

This event is intended for private sector actors and professionals who have some experience of humanitarian contexts and/ or working in/ with Sudan.

The event is organised with the input of humanitarian organisations. Prior to the event, we will compile a list of sources on the current situation in Sudan to inform the dialogue.
