Event description

Every day in Knowsley hundreds of adults regularly use care and health services. These range from hospitals to care homes to mental health day centres.

And, whilst these services do their best to care for every person with dignity and respect, we also know that when people are removed their homes and communities for long periods of time, it has an adverse effect on their long term health and happiness.

The opposite is true when people’s health and care needs are met locally. People who find the support they need near to where they live are less likely to become lonely and tend to stay well for longer!

This event looks at how we can support the growth of more local initiatives to keep people safe well and healthy in the neighbourhoods where they live.

The events

We are running 3 events.

Each event will consider how we support the growth of more local ideas & initiatives in the places where people grow, live, work and age.

for Halewood, New Hutte Neighbourhood Centre, Lichfield Road,L26 1TT - book onto 1st November

for Kirkby, Northwood Community Centre, Gilescroft Avenue Northwood L33 9TW - book onto 7th November

for Huyton, Court Hey Methodist Church, Roby Road, L14 3NU - book onto 10th November

Please note! The three days are identical in format, but each one will look at a different area of Knowlsey.

Why are we holding these events now?

Like many other councils we have spent too long focusing on problems in communities and then spent all our energy considering how we ‘fix’ those problems. When we view things in this way, we often miss the strengths of each neighbourhood. We miss the great ideas that are already making a difference and may just need a little bit of extra support to get to the next level.

We want to change this. We want to build on the great ideas, knowledge and energy that people living and working within the community already hold.

This event is the starting point of a 12month project, (initially) which will look at how we keep people out of the statutory services they may never have needed, by supporting more local initiatives in the local community.

Why Halewood, Kirkby and Huyton?

The simple answer is that we need to start somewhere but, if this way of working is successful, we will look to extend it to other areas of the borough. We’ve chosen these three localities in part, because they are all quite different. You don’t need to live and work in one of these areas to take part, but we will be looking to develop and support initiatives that are located in each of these communities.

Our offer is this.

If people our 3 areas can come up with way(s) to help people to live well, remain independent and become less reliant on statutory services (or avoid them entirely) we will provide support for those ideas to develop.

This might involve:

  • The development of new local enterprises or by helping ones those are already established and doing a great job achieve more.
  • Creating a more equal partnership between people who use services, carers, professionals and local organisations.
  • Letting go of some of our existing responsibilities and assets by offering them to people who want to develop new fresh, more innovative solutions to improving health and wellbeing locally under our asset transfer programme.

If you want to be part of shaping the future of Knowsley then this event is for you. Great lunch and refreshments provided!

Who should attend?

If you have ideas about how we can do things differently then we’d love it if you came along to a one of our local events. Even if you dont want to set up a community initiative or assistive technology project we need people who live, work and visit these areas to share their knowledge of what works and what is needed. The day will be informal and fun. So come along and feel free to join in.

This includes;

Local residents, community organisations, schools/ colleges

People who use services or carers, (you not only understand the problem but probably have a sense of what is needed – we want to spend time with you).

Local service providers; care home owners, mental health services

Local entrepreneurs, technologists, business owners, creatives or academics you can bring fresh ideas and approaches to the table.

Commissioners & practitioners in health and care services, partner organisations, CVS, Knowsley Healthwatch
