Event description

Description

The Cultural Institute is pleased to announce five collaborations of artists and researchers in Leeds Creative Labs: Biological Sciences Edition.

  • Yoselin Benitez-Alfonso, with Sam Amsbury and Phil Kirk – matched with Nathan Geering from Rationale Theatre Company, who creates hip-hop theatre that is accessible to all by investigating the positive effects of hiphop dance on physical and mental wellbeing – particularly investigating Visual Impairment.
  • Jack Goode, with researchers of antimicrobial resistance Christoph Wälti, Paul Milner, Mike McPherson, Mike Szymoniak, Hope Adamson and Rajan Sharma – matched with Jono and Claire Gadsby from Fused Imagination, a theatre company that creates mid-scale, immersive spectacles, theatrical interventions and happenings in found and non-theatrical spaces.
  • Christopher Hassell, with multidisciplinary team including Ian Kellar, Martin Dallimer and Rosie McEachan – matched with Alison Smith, an artist who uses experimental craft processes to create sculptural light installations using recycled materials.
  • Faisal Mushtaq and Mark Mon-Williams – matched with Amy Evans, whose work is vibrant, full of character, and always grounded in the natural world, whether that is using natural shapes or referencing animals/plants.
  • Paul Knox – matched with Clare Fisher, a writer of voice-driven contemporary fiction which seeks to inhabit challenging spaces, be they physical, social, or psychological.

Facilitated by the DARE partnership, the Cultural Institute's pioneering Leeds Creative Labs programme has brought together scientists from the University of Leeds with artists, challenging both to share knowledge and explore ways of working that demonstrate the potential of the arts to inform, interpret and present impactful research in ways that inspire and engage diverse audiences.

Launched on Monday 13 November, five teams are collaborating over a two-month period before jointly sharing their experiences at this open event at stage@leeds. This event would be of interest to anyone curious about how academia and the creative arts can challenge and inspire each other. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and networking, fuelled by refreshments and ending with lunch.

Please see the Cutural Institute's website to find out more about the Leeds Creative Labs programme.
