Event description

Description

Join your hosts' Museums Galleries Scotland and National Museums Scotland for a one-day symposium focusing on the themes of lending, borrowing, and touring exhibitions. We'll be exploring the barriers and opportunities surrounding inter-museum loans and the sharing of collections, while identifying what support is available nationally and internationally.

Participants will be introduced to current practice, new ideas, and innovative initiatives, with the symposium acting as a springboard for a six-month follow-on skills development programme delivered by partners or commissioned by Museums Galleries Scotland.

Our keynotes are Dr Xerxes Mazda from National Museums Scotland, who will be asking 'why loan?', Dana Andrew, who will look at how the International Council of Museums supports international loans, and Sally Colvine from the Museums Association, who'll talk about how Museums Change Lives.

In our workshop sessions, the Touring Exhibitions Group will guide us through the basics and economic models for touring, Neil Curtis from the University of Aberdeen will talk about their Egyptian loan in collaboration with Lokschuppen Exhibition Centre in Rosenheim, and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will address community curation.

Other sessions will cover ethical considerations, government indemnity and funding (with funders Esmée Fairbairn, Art Fund, Museums Galleries Scotland and Heritage Lottery Fund), while a marketplace and a practical hands-on session with aspects of borrowing will be led by National Museums Scotland.

Tickets for staff and volunteers of Scottish museums are £25, and tickets for representatives of the museum sector outwith Scotland are £50.

We look forward to seeing you there!
