Event description

Description

Please join us for a not so nostalgic trip down memory lane to the 1940s in the iconic Cinema Museum. Join author Helen Jacey as she talks about some of her favourite 1940s characters in noir movies - the good, the bad and the incredibly beautiful. Famous 1940s noir movies will be under the spotlight as Helen explores them from a distinctly feminist and irreverent perspective.

When career women are few and far between in noir films, and female detectives even more rare, find out how and why Helen created the first fictional 1940s feminist detective Elvira Slate. She will share the challenges of reinventing the 1940s with a contemporary female gaze, explaining why ‘vintage style not vintage values’ became a mantra for her creative process.

The talk will include guest appearances, followed by a book launch and signing of Chipped Pearls: Elvira Slate Investigations Book 2 by Helen Jacey. A free drink will be offered at the Book Launch, after the talk.

The venue is the atmospheric and historically important Cinema Museum (a Grade II listed building), once the old Lambeth workhouse where Charlie Chaplin spent time when his family fell on hard times. It is a fitting venue for the book launch of Chipped Pearls. Elvira Slate is a Hollywood 1940s detective with a difference – an excon originally from the Elephant and Castle.

'A fresh, fast-moving and atmospheric take on Forties Noir with a tough street-wise female detective Philip Marlowe would have been proud to work with.’

Stephen Wyatt, writer, Classic Chandler, BBC Radio 4 and author of The World and His Wife.
