We invite you to attend the launch of the Sheffield Machine Learning Research Network.


Join us to celebrate the launch of the new Sheffield Machine Learning Research Network, with an inaugural lecture by Prof Neil Lawrence, director of Machine Learning at Amazon Research Cambridge and Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Sheffield. The lecture will be followed by a networking reception with drinks and nibbles.

The lecture will take place in Lecture Theatre 3 of the Diamond building, followed by the reception in the basement foyer.

Speaker Bio


Neil Lawrence leads Amazon Research Cambridge where he is a Director of Machine Learning. He is on leave of absence from the University of Sheffield where he is a Professor in Computational Biology and Machine Learning in the the Department of Computer Science.


Neil’s main research interest is machine learning through probabilistic models. He focuses on both the algorithmic side of these models and their application. His recent focus has been on the deployment of machine learning technology in practice, particularly under the banner of data science. He is also the co-host of the Talking Machines podcast.

What is the Sheffield Machine Learning Research Network?


The Machine Learning Research Network is a forum for researchers working with machine learning based at the University of Sheffield. We host a series of activities and events that fall under the umbrella of the network. The aim of the network is to promote collaboration and to provide support for researchers and students who are working with or have interest in machine learning topics.


The research network is open to anyone within the university, and aims to foster an accessible environment. More information can be found on our website at https://sheffieldmlnet.github.io.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?


Information for visitors, including maps and travel advice, and information for disabled visitors can be found on the University of Sheffield website.


Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?


Bringing along a printed ticket, or presenting the ticket on your phone, will help us speedily confirm your admission. However, we will also have a list of all registered guests on the door.


I am not a student or member of staff at the University of Sheffield, can I still come?


The launch event is open to the public and anyone who registers for a ticket may attend. The Diamond building, the venue in which the event will take place, has restricted access to the public out-of-hours, so you will need to be escorted by a member of the events team. Please use the west entrance, off Jessop Plaza.
