Who can come along?

If your child is aged between 8 and 17 years and has basic skating ability (can stay upright on quad skates and skate forwards) WE WANT THEM! No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, and so much more!

What do you need?

Everyone attending a new recruit session will need to have all of the following:

  • Quad Skates
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Helmet
  • Mouthguard

These things are for your child/ren safety and of those around them.

We are also able to lend out certain pieces of kit (supplies are limited as they are all donations, so please email us at juniors@sheffieldsteelrollergirls.co.uk  to check availability). And your child/ren will definitely need their own mouthguard!

How does the session work?

Running for six consecutive weeks from,  9:30 - 10.30pm at Springs Leisure Centre, the weekly session will take attendees through the appropriate level of the Sheffield Steel Junior Roller Derby Training programme according to your pre-teens and or teenagers ability.  Junior rollers  will learn the fundamentals of roller derby in order to  advance (when ready) to the next level in Junior Roller Derby Training Programme.

To ensure your child gets the most out of the session please ensure your child is in the sports hall, ready and dressed in appropriate clothing to take part in a physical activity for the 9:30 session start time.

What are the costs?

The Sheffield Steel Junior Rollers, Junior Derby Training Programme (Levels 1 - 3)  is £30 (or £50 for a more than 1 child) for 6 weeks (6 hours).  Once you register we well contact you to arrange payment.   Please note your reservation is not valid until you finalise payment   To keep the sessions manageable and maintain the 3:1 ratio we will limit the intake to 30 juniors.

FAQs

Is there an age limit?

Yes - we can only accept skaters who are over 8 - 17 years.  If your child is over 18 years please head over to Sheffield Steel Rollergirls or The Inhuman League website to find out when the next In take taster session they will be eligible to register for takes place.

I don't have any equipment, do you have kit I can borrow?

Yes - We are able loan safety pads (skates, helmets, knee, wrist and elbow) for use during tasters session or for rental for a nominal fee during the courses. Please get in touch as soon as possible to give us chance to source skates, or kit to accommodate non-standard requests. For more information about our rental kit, to reserve some items or ask questions about the process or kit in general please email juniors@sheffieldsteelrollergirls.co.uk
Any surplus generated from kit rental is used purchase more equipment.

For and hygiene reasons we would not be able to loan mouth guards.

Are there other places I  can  source kit from?

If you're looking to buy new equipment then there are plenty online stores.  You could also try UK Roller Derby Recyclables for used kit.

Please note that well maintained derby equipment holds it value very well, allowing you to  resell items easily as your child grows out of equipment.

Indeed once established, we would hope parent's of  junior league skaters would  naturally self organise to create a market place for the location an transfer of second hand junior roller derby kit.   Finally you could also try the Sheffield Freecyle and Freegle sites, Sheffield Forum or Gum Tree to source temporary pieces of kit before you invest in your own.

Is the registration/ticket transferrable?

No - Each parent who wishes for their child/ren to attends must register for themselves.  If you'd like to invite a friend please forward the link. The more the merrier!

Can I update my registration information?

Yes - Please log to update your details.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, this is Sheffield "Save the trees!"  We'll print out a list of attendees at the start of each six week course.
