So your child wants to be a Junior Roller? Well bring them along to our Free Junior Roller Derby taster session and give it a go!
Who can come along?
If your child is aged between 8 and 17 years and has basic skating ability (can stay upright on quad skates and skate forwards) WE WANT THEM! No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, and so much more!
What do you need?
Everyone attending a new recruit session will need to have all of the following:
These things are for your child/ren safety and of those around them. Sheffield is fortunate enough to have the UK's first dedicated roller derby shop, Derby Store (www.derbystore.co.uk). They are based in the Harland Works on John Street, and can help you with all your derby needs.
We are also able to lend out certain pieces of kit (supplies are limited as they are all donations, so please email us at to check availability). And your child/ren will definitely need their own mouthguard!
How does the session work?
The session will run from 9:30 - 10.30pm at Springs Leisure Centre. We start with an introduction to the saftey equipment, a kit check, kit identification, putting on and taking off kit to ensure your child/ren know what the pieces of kit are called and how they should be worn. We will then do an off skates warm up, before putting on skates (which you are welcome to stay for, should you feel your child might benefit from some extra assistance). Your child will also learn some basic drills and be introduced to the core skills they will need to be safe during practice.
To ensure your child gets the most out of the session please ensure your child is in the sports hall, ready and dressed in appropriate clothing to take part in a physical activity for the 9:30 session start time.
If your child likes the session and we feel happy they'll be safe, will invite you to sign up for our Junior Roller Derby Level 1 programme, where your child/ren will learn all the skills necessary to play roller derby and advance (when ready) to the next level in Junior Roller Derby .
What are the costs?
Your child's taster session is free. The cost of each Junior Roller Derby programme level is £40 run once a week for 8 weeks.
Now all that's left is for you to complete the registration form to reserve your child place! And please feel free to join the Facebook event and start chatting to the other parents of skaters your child you'll be starting with.
Is there an age limit?
Yes - we can only accept skaters who are over 8 - 17 years. If your child is over 18 years please head over to Sheffield Steel Rollergirls or The Inhuman League website to find out when the next In take taster session they will be eligible to register for takes place.
Is the registration/ticket transferrable?
No - Each parent who wishes for their child/ren to attends must register for themselves. If you'd like to invite a friend please forward the link. The more the merrier!
Can I update my registration information?
Yes - Please log to update your details.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No - Save the trees. We'll print out a list of attendees for each session.
