Event description

Who can come along?

If you are a self-identifying woman over the age of 18 and have basic skating ability (can stay upright on quad skates and skate forwards) WE WANT YOU! No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, and so much more!

What do you need?

Everyone attending a new recruit session will need to have all of the following:

  • Quad Skates
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Helmet
  • Mouth guard

These things are for your safety and of those around you. You can get kit from a variety of websites such as Skate Hut, eBay, or by searching UK Roller Derby Recyclables on Facebook. Anyone missing kit on the day will not be able to skate.

We have a limited amount of loan kit to offer new skaters. You can request loan kit when you register for the new intake. Everything we have is donations from our skaters, so we can't guarantee we'll have everything you'll need, but we'll do our best. Where possible, for your safety please try to get your own properly fitted helmet - concussions are no fun! And you will definitely need your own mouthguard.

Loan kit costs £2 per item for 4 weeks. After that, we hope that you'll have fallen in love with roller derby and will want to get your own kit.

How does the session work?

The session will run from 10:00 - 13.00 at Springs Leisure Centre. We start by signing you in and getting your all kitted up, followed by a short introduction to Sheffield Steel Rollergirls and information on the team and training. From 11:00 onwards you will be on your skates; the training team will help you through some basic drills and introduce you to the core skills you will need.

If you like what you see throughout the session and we feel happy you'll be safe, you can sign up for our 16-week Minimum Skills course, where you will learn all the skills necessary to play roller derby.

If you're not feeling quite confident enough on skates after the first session, never fear, you can still be involved with Sheffield Steel Rollergirls! We will add you to our new members' page on Facebook, where there will be information about free practice sessions, social events, and Non-Skate Official (NSO) opportunities so you can get in on all the derby action.

What are the costs?

Your first session is free; after that it's £5 per session. Once you're happy you want to stay and play with us, the cost is £35 a month, payable by standing order (reduced dues are available, just ask a member of the team). You will also sign a code of conduct to be an official member of the team.

Now all that's left is for you to complete the registration form to reserve your place!

Is there an age limit?

Yes - we can only accept skaters who are over 18, so we need to see photo id (passport/driving license) before you can start skating.

I really want to join but I can't make the new intake event date. Can I still join?

Yes! You must still register your place on the new intake event. Then please let us know at and we'll arrange for you to join at the earliest opportunity (within 4 weeks of the new intake event date).

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

No - each person who attends must register for themselves.  If you'd like to invite a friend please forward the link. The more the merrier!

Can I update my registration information?

Yes - please log in to Eventbrite to update your details.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No - please save the trees! We'll have a list of attendees for each session.
