Event description
The history of Sheffield’s cinemas brought to life by local historian Mike Higginbottom

About this event

At the start of World War II there were fifty-two cinemas operating in Sheffield. Two more opened after the war. The very last of them closed in 1988, just as the first of the modern multiplex cinemas were opening across the city.

In the early 1980s, Mike Higginbottom surveyed the then-surviving cinema buildings within the city; at that time, at least twenty-one remained substantially intact, if not in use. Since then, two pre-war Sheffield cinemas - the Abbeydale and the Adelphi - have been listed Grade II and at least ten have been demolished.

Join Mike for an engaging, illustrated foray into the history of Sheffield’s cinemas, including some survivals which might surprise you.

Please note that because of Covid-19 social distancing measures, only 50 tickets are available. Please read the information about Covid-19 measures (below) before booking.

This event is part of the Abbeydale Picturehouse centenary day celebrations; five events between 11am and 10pm. Discover the whole day’s programme here. Each event is bookable separately, and a very limited number of discounted all-day tickets are available.

Covid-19 measures - please read before booking.

All performance venues are currently closed, in line with Covid-19 government regulations. The ‘roadmap’ indicates that venues are due to reopen from May 17th - at the earliest. We do not yet know what the legislation will specify with regard to public performances and Covid safety measures.

We are proceeding on the basis that social distancing will continue to be necessary. This means that YSFF events in 2021 will continue to have limited audience capacity and all tickets will be sold online, in advance - with no sales on the door at any venue. We ask that ticket purchasers mix only with members of their own household or their support bubble. (This may change if regulations relax in May 2021)

Specific seats will be allocated to each booking - unfortunately it will not be possible for audience members to select their own seats. An entry time is specified for each booking, either fifteen minutes or thirty minutes before the start time. To help us achieve successful social distancing, please arrive as close to the time specified on your tickets as possible. If you arrive early, please remain away from the Abbeydale until the arrival time specified on your ticket. Please arrive together as a group with your household or bubble.

Performances will start promptly at the time specified on tickets. If you arrive after this time, we may not be able to admit you. Should this be the case, we will be unable to offer refunds.

Should restrictions still prevent venues reopening by the dates of planned performances, events will be rescheduled and prompt refunds processed for those who cannot make the new date.

Once the government announces the reopening of venues this page will be updated with all the relevant information.
