Sheila Templeton - A Celebration

Tuesday 30th April 2024

CCA Glasgow

Join us as we pay tribute and celebrate the life of the late Sheila Templeton.

This is an open and joint gathering alongside our esteemed friends, St. Mungo's Mirrorball where Sheila's poetry sparkled many a night, and Federation of Writers (Scotland) where Sheila was the Makar from 2010 to 2011.

Sheila Templeton was an incredible performer. Her mesmerising and soothing voice enchanted audience members across the country. She was also a maestro of language and words.

Sheila was one of those spectacular individuals with immense talents equal to or even exceeded by her values as a human being. Sheila's kind heart, curiosity and sense of fun were legendary.

"When looking at losses of my own, writing is what I do," - Sheila Templeton in 2017 when asked about prefacing a eulogy for her mother.

Family, friends and writers are all welcome.

If you would like to pay tribute on the night, please fill out this form or email info@scottishwriterscentre.co.uk

Sheila Templeton wrote in both Scots and English. She was nominated as Scots Writer of the Year in the Scots Language Awards 2020, and won a number of prizes including the Neil Gunn Adult Poetry Competition 2019. She won the James McCash Scots Language Poetry Competition no fewer than four times. She was the Makar of the Federation of Writers Scotland from 2009 to 2010. Her most recent poetry collection was Clyack (Red Squirrel Press, 2021). She died in November 2023.

The Scottish Writers’ Centre is a countrywide resource, which supports national writers and promotes Scotland’s vibrant literary culture. Operated solely by volunteers, the SWC is therefore by writers, for writers – the organisation provides a space for writers to meet, share ideas and experiences about the craft, and learn from those further advanced. Central to this cause are the facilities provided by, and the activities arranged with the support of, Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts (where the SWC is currently based).

Through ‘In Process’ masterclasses, the SWC encourages literary appreciation and professional development. Led by renowned Scottish writers at the top of their respective fields (be it Novel, Play, or Poetry writing), future classes will include Screen and Comic Book media (charting the transformative process of adaption). The SWC also holds open-forum discussions and debates with eminent guest speakers, in which visitors can share their opinions and ideas.
