Shifting borders: Artist workshop with Revolv Collective and Vera Hadzhiyska
This fast-paced collaborative workshop invites participants to question the notions of shifting borders and boundaries in the world (geographically, politically, historically) and within the photographic medium. Leading the workshop will be Revolv member Lucas Gabellini-Fava alongside Victoria Doyle in collaboration with Vera Hadzhiyska.
The workshop will consist of a brief introduction followed by hands-on session. Working together, participants will have the chance to photograph within the space or use their already existing photographs, and collaborate on the creation of a zine forming a conversation around the notions of shifting borders and boundaries in life and within the photographic medium.
IMPORTANT! Please bring an object, photographs or anything else that you associate with borders and boundaries in any sense of the words. Digital files are accepted, we can print on site. Feel free to also bring a laptop if you wish.
BOOKING for the workshop is essential!
*This workshop is part of the exhibition “With the Name of a Flower” by Vera Hadzhiyska which will be on display at Four Corners Gallery from 4th until 7th September (11am- 6pm). Opening on Tue 3rd Sept, 6 till 9 pm.
Vera Hadzhiyska is a Bulgarian multi-disciplinary artist based in England. The study of migration, cultural and national identity, history and collective memory are central to her work. She uses photography, audio and video installations, sculpture and the archive to interrogate past and present historical and political events in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe.
Revolv Collective create inclusive opportunities for emerging artists. Run by Lina Ivanova & Krasimira Butseva later joined by Lucas Gabellini-Fava and Ibrahim Azab. Revolv form a dialogue on collaboration and obliterate individual authorship through collective making in lectures, workshops and exhibitions. They construct public programmes in different cities across England and Bulgaria.
Lucas Gabellini-Fava is a London based artist. He graduated from the London College of Communication with a First-class Honours in photography. Employing personal and found photography, camera-less techniques, alternative printing processes, video and text, Lucas is interested in the absurdity of the mundane whilst questioning the erratic state of the photographic image. In recent works, he entangles elements of technology with memory, agony and satire, creating digital and physical installations.
Victoria Doyle is an artist based between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and London. In a continued investigation into the ontology of the photograph through its authentic and metaphysical properties, she carves new territory in the study of the image; questioning the autonomy of the photograph. Perceived boundaries of photography are broken down, with sculpture and installation methods utilised in her work with medium promiscuity.
