Event description

Description

Kim Peters, Department of Geography and Planning, University of Liverpool

Today, 96% of trade reaches our shores by ship. Everything we own and use on a daily basis is intimately connected to vessel movements at sea. In Liverpool, with a long history of maritime activity and a new state-of-the-art port, shipping is part of the very fabric of the city. But how do things safely and securely reach port? Of course there are navigational charts, the expertise of captains and also the special role of pilots. Yet Liverpool also developed an innovative piece of 'infrastructure' at sea, a system that would guide ships to port from the deep sea. This lecture explores this overlooked, invisible infrastructure and the role it has played in Liverpool and worldwide in ensuring cargo moves from A-to-B, ship to shore.
