Event description

Description

Since July 2018, arts and science organisation Invisible Dust has been touring the project Shore: How We See the Sea asking Scotland’s coastal communities to respond to the local and national impact of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Join the project team for this fascinating presentation of the creative research and responses gathered from artists, marine scientists and those who live, work and care for the sea in 8 locations from Barra to Dundee reflecting the very real and urgent responsibility we all have in policing and protecting our precious marine environment.

We’ll be presenting the two specially commissioned films by Scottish-based filmmakers that were screened at each location and sparked the nationwide Shore conversations. Cladach by Margaret Salmon, is a beautiful portrait of life above and below the shoreline in Wester Ross; and I walk there every day but I never saw it that way, is Ed Webb-Ingall’s exploration of communities living with the MPA designation in the Firth of Clyde.

Margaret and Ed’s distinctive artistic approaches to the impact of MPAs reflect the complex scientific, environmental, economic and social issues involved and has created two significant bodies of research in themselves. Both artists will be in attendance to discuss the in-depth engagement work they each undertook within the limits of the brief.

There will also be a chance to hear the community voices from the tour. Alongside screenings of the Shore films, creative and scientific activity was co-curated with each tour host venue to provide a unique local context, as well as opportunities for everyone to contribute their own thoughts and observations. Recorded by creative ethnologist Mairi McFadyen of Local Voices, this has created a ‘chain’ conversation across Scotland. Mairi will be at this event to present her findings and share some of the audio recorded in Arran, Barra, Ullapool, Gairloch, Skye and Helmsdale.

Complementing this special event, a special Shore exhibition of voices, creative responses and images gathered in each participating community will be on display in the Stratosphere area of Dynamic Earth from 8th-20th April as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival programme.

Shore: How We See the Sea is curated by Invisible Dust and supported by Creative Scotland and the Wellcome Trust. This is event is part of the Edinburgh Science Festival.
