Shore Lines: salty tales with a coastal setting, told by The Border Readers

Join us for an evening of captivating storytelling in beautiful St Cuthbert's Church, Elsdon. Be transported to the sandy shores of Northumberland and Devon by spellbinding seaside tales of mystery and romance, told by professional actors and written by authors based in the North East and Borders. An intimate live listening experience for everyone.

The Weather Glam by Tony Glover. Violet seeks a guiding light on Lindisfarne.

Mud by Ann Cleeves. A haunting tale of teenage angst turned murderous on a Devon estuary.

Crossing the Bar by Linda Cracknell. A story on the sands echoing Tennyson's poem.

Touch and Go by Jo Scott. A witty romance. Anchored in Amble, will Jenny ever set sail?

Frequently asked questions

Who are The Border Readers?

The brilliant Border Readers are an association of regionally based experienced professional actors who present themed audio narratives in libraries, art centres, galleries, hostelries, village halls, theatres, pubs and historic houses across the English border counties and into Scotland.

What does the event include?

The evening will comprise four short stories told by members of The Border Readers. The event will last about two hours. There will be an interval midway, when light refreshments will be served (included in the price of your ticket).

What facilities are there at St Cuthbert's Church?

Please be aware there are no toilets at the church. You'll find public toilets just down the road at Elsdon Village Hall. Refreshments will be served in the interval (also a good opportunity to nip along to the loo if you need to!) Even in September, it can be chilly in the church so bring layers.

Can I park at the church?

There is an informal layby opposite the church, on the village green. However, we do encourage you to use the parking area beside the burn about 100 yards east of the church, near the village hall (it's free!)

How accessible is the church?

The gently sloping path up to the church porch is fine gravel - not ideal for wheelchairs but possible with a bit of help. Once inside, the floor is generally level and the aisles are wide. Acoustics and lighting are good. But please remember there are no toilets (accessible loo at the village hall)

I love the image on the banner. Who painted it?

It's called Bamburgh Beach and was painted by the talented Ben Haslam, who is based in Hexham. Find out more about Ben and his work by searching Haslam's of Hallgate.

Do I need to print my ticket?

You DO NOT need to print your ticket! We will have a list - just give us your name when you arrive.
