Come and join us in Plymouth to learn all about British crabs!

Course Description: A one-day introduction to the wide diversity of crabs found in British waters. Participants will learn how to identify the crabs they find, on the shore and shallow seas through a combination of interactive talks, viewing specimens and a field trip to a local shore site.

The course will cover:

  • Crab Anatomy, Biology and Ecology
  • An overview of other crab-like animals
  • True crab (Brachyuran) species identification by group
  • non-native crabs found in Britain
  • Sampling/ survey methods
  • Photographing crabs

Course Tutor: Jack Sewell - The Marine Biological Association. Jack has more than 17 years experience working on the rocky shore and has a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm about crabs. He co-developed the citizen science project CrabWatch and has a particular interest in non-native crabs.

Who should attend? This course is suitable for beginers, wanting to better understand the crabs they find rockpooling or crabbing, as well as more advanced naturalists looking to develop their crab identification skills. Conservation agency and consultancy staff and divers interested in brushing up their crab identification skills will also benefit from this course. Also suitable for teachers and marine educators, wishing to incorporate crab work in their lessons and activities.

Parking: There are a small number of parking spaces available on site and these are available on a first-come-first-served basis (Disabled parking can be reserved if needed). Other parking is available nearby and public transport links to the lab are good.
