Short Course: Introduction to Seaweed

The UK Coastline is home to a huge diversity of seaweed species. Seaweed is a vital part of shore and shallow sea ecosystems. It is also used in foods, medicine and even your mobile phone! Come and join us in Plymouth for a fascinating hands-on introduction to seaweeds to find out more.
Course Tutor: Esther Hughes (The Marine Biological Association) is an expert in botany, specialising in marine macroalgae. She has a wealth of knowledge regarding UK seaweed species and has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject. Esther has run seaweed identification courses previously for naturalist groups locally, including Devon Wildlife Trust.
Course Description: The course will cover the basics of seaweed classification and identification with examination of collected specimens on a local rocky shore. It will include an introduction to the biology and identification of common red, green, and brown species. as well as a lab session in the afternoon identifying collected specimens
Course participants will learn to identify common or important native and non-native species found along the South Devon and Cornish Coast. There will also be an opportunity to press collected specimens at the end of the course.
Who should attend? This one-day ‘Introduction to Seaweed’ course caters for those interested in seaweeds at beginner level but welcomes more experienced naturalists. Also suitable for teachers and marine educators wishing to incorporate seaweed in their lessons and activities.
What is included? The course fee includes all course materials, parking at the laboratory, packed lunch and tea and coffee throughout. By paying to participate in this course, you will be supporting the wider educational work of the Marine Biological Association.

Refund Policy: Cancelations received 10 days or more before the event will be refunded in full. Cancelations after this time will be refunded if the place on the course can be filled, otherwise the following will apply: 10 - 5 days before the event will recieve a 50% refund on the total course cost and cancelations received within five days of the event will not automatically be entitled to a refund.
