Event description

Description

Non-native species are a risk to the marine environment and our economy. They can threaten native species, ecosystems and natural features or interfere with business interests such as aquaculture, fisheries, shipping and recreational boating.

Given the high costs of mitigation, control and eradication of invasive NNS once they are established, the emphasis must be on prevention of arrival and, failing that, rapid response to the introduction of a NNS before it becomes established. The ability to spot a new arrival, report it and monitor NNS already present are important factors in this.

Course Tutors: John Bishop, Christine Wood, Anna Yunnie

Description: A one day workshop for beginners, consisting of talks, practical sessions and a trip to a marina. It will provide familiarisation, based on actual specimens, with a selection of non-native species (NNS) already present locally and some that might arrive soon. The visit to a marina will enable several NNS to be seen in situ and collected for examination back in the laboratory. Advice on reporting suspected sightings will be given.

Who should attend? This workshop is aimed at those working in the marine sector who are concerned with biosecurity, and anyone generally interested in NNS at a beginner level.

What is included? Course materials, waterproof ID guide to marine NNS, sandwich lunch, tea and coffee throughout.

MBA members receive a generous discount on all MBA organised training courses. If you are not already a member, you can join here before registering to receive a discounted rate.

Discount vouchers: Staff from the organisations who attended the recent biosecurity workshops for the Tamar Estuaries or the South Devon AONB should check they have the appropriate discount code before booking.

Refund Policy: Cancellations received 10 days or more before the event will be refunded in full. Cancellations after this time will be refunded if the place on the course can be filled, otherwise the following will apply: 10 - 5 days before the event will receive a 50% refund on the total course cost and cancellations received within five days of the event will not automatically be entitled to a refund.
