Description

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Shooting People, one of the UK’s most established independent filmmaker networks. To celebrate, we’ve launched SHORT CUTS, a year long quarterly film competition which is focussed on career development. Prizes include industry mentorship, filmmaking equipment, prizes and a £1,000 film fund to go towards your next project.

At our final SHORT CUTS event of the year - December 4th - we’ll be announcing both the winner of our October competition and the overall winner of 2018, who will walk away with a £1,000 prize.

For this special end of year event, we’re very excited to welcome the legendary Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning producer/director, Stephen Woolley.

Stephen is one of the UK’s most prolific and accomplished film producers, with over sixty-five films in his storied career, including some of the most acclaimed and successful British and international films of the past three decades.

Alongside running the infamous Scala cinema in London’s Kings Cross for a decade (1982-92), Woolley initiated a long-term filmmaking partnership with director Neil Jordan, starting with The Company of Wolves. They went on to make the multi Oscar-nominated trio Mona Lisa starring Cathy Tyson and Bob Hoskins, Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts, The End of the Affair starring Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes, as well as Interview with the Vampire starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and the Oscar-winning The Crying Game, for which Woolley was nominated for an Academy Award and was awarded Producer of the Year by the Producer’s Guild of America.

As co-founder of Number 9 Films in 2002 alongside producing partner Elizabeth Karlsen, he produced Carol in 2015, directed by Todd Haynes, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as co-producing Paolo Sorrentino's Youth starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel – both of which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.

Number 9’s 2018 release is a production of On Chesil Beach, starring Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle, which had its world premiere at the 2017 TIFF and screened at the 2017 London Film Festival. The film was released to wide acclaim.

The most recent Number 9 production, Colette starring Keira Knightley and directed by Wash Westmoreland, world-premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will be released in the UK on January 11th 2019 by Lionsgate. Watch the trailer, here.

Stephen has been a member of the American Academy for twenty-five years and was chairman of the BAFTA Film Committee for ten years.

"I’ve been able to work with filmmakers up and down the country, who got in contact with projects they were working on. I’ve been able to colour grade features, shorts, commercials and documentaries. Plus, I’ve had the opportunity to attend screenings all over the UK, including the BFI and BAFTA, and met tons of talented people!
