Event description

Description

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Shooting People, one of the UK’s most established independent filmmaker networks. To celebrate, we’ve launched SHORT CUTS, a year long film competition with four seasonal rounds. Prizes include industry mentorship, filmmaking equipment, prizes and a £1,000 film fund to go towards your next project.

At our SHORT CUTS Summer Event we’re very excited to welcome the brilliant award-winning writer, director and actor Desiree Akhavan to explore her journey from making shorts, hit web series The Slope, and critically acclaimed features Appropriate Behaviour (2014) and The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018), which won the top Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival this year.

"A lot of times when a movie is called “important” it’s hiding the fact that it is boring or dated or loaded with fake drama. Not here. The Miseducation of Cameron Post will be a panacea for gay kids for years to come, so for that our prayers have been answered." ✭✭✭✭✭ The Guardian

"It beautifully articulates the need for young people to realize the validity of who they are, and even more beautifully crystalizes the moment when that starts to happen." Indiewire

"Akhavan is a master at balancing the highs and lows of Post’s story." ScreenDaily

Desiree has frequently acted in her own work, starting with genius web-series The Slope in 2011. She went on to write, direct and star in her debut feature film Appropriate Behavior, which premiered at Sundance in 2014 and was nominated for numerous awards. Outside of her own projects, Desiree has also performed in Lena Dunham’s Girls, Mark Duplass' feature film Creep 2, and Channel 4's hit show Flowers.

Desiree is currently in post-production on a wickedly hilarious TV series, The Bisexual, for Channel 4 and Hulu. She directed, co-wrote and stars in the series alongside Maxine Peake and Brian Gleeson. Desiree’s latest feature, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, will be released in the UK on August 31st.

Alongside the Q&A, we will also screen the winning film from our SHORT CUTS Summer Competition, which will be selected by writer/director Michael Pearce (Dir. Beast).

The event is FREE and open to all. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Once venue is at capacity we will not be allowed to admit people on the list - arrive early to ensure you get in.
