About this event

Kayd is thrilled to host an inspiring creatives networking/social afternoon on Saturday 25th October from 4–6pm at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, E2 6HG, as part of Somali Week 2025.

This special event brings together Somali creatives from across disciplines - including film directors, actors, producers, musicians, podcast creators, and writers offering a rare opportunity to connect, collaborate, and celebrate the growing global impact of Somali voices in the arts.

At the start of the event, we will screen A Story Left Behind, a short film by Asma Kabadeh Asma is a creative producer and filmmaker with an extensive background in collaborative arts initiatives, working across arts and heritage, community development, and documentary film. Her work focuses on under-represented voices, and she enjoys creating spaces to bring people together to discuss, experiment and create. Her debut short film, 'A Story Left Behind' (BFI DocSociety funded), premiered at Sheffield Docfest in 2025 - accompanied by an impact campaign which delves further into archival records, and their fragments for Somali and wider diaspora communities.

Short Synopsis

Having moved to Sheffield from Somalia at 11, Najma feels like many migrants: straddling two worlds yet disconnected from both. She discovers a short storybook in the Sheffield Library written by Halima, a Somali woman who arrived in the UK in 1956. The information creates a limited, fragmented, and deeply sombre narrative. A Story Left Behind follows Najma as she tries to fill in the gaps in Halima's story, exploring the contradictions of what Halima recorded of her life and what she omitted. Through the process, Najma embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

The film celebrates Sheffield's vibrant Somali community while discussing the universal importance of archiving cultural history as an anchor for future generations.
