GFEST – Gaywise FESTival ® 2016 Films: “Crossing the Marginal”
GFEST 2016 feature and short films line-up present this year’s theme of marginalised and ‘out and proud’ LGBTIQ identities in complimenting or contrasting way.
The screenings at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre provide a unique opportunity to engage with films about African LGBTiQ communities. It is a combination of a community event with locally based community groups including the Out & Proud Diamond Group and two screenings. Doors open at 4.00 pm, with screenings at 5.30pm and 8.00pm. There will be ample opportunity for Q/A and discussion.

AND STILL WE RISE

A story of courage and resilience, the film follows Richard Lusimbo, researcher and documentation manager for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), as he documents the impact of the 2014 Anti-Homosexual Act (AHA) in Uganda and the resistance by civil society in Uganda, led by SMUG and the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law.

A first person documentary on homosexuality in Malawi that investigates the complexities of tolerance, acceptance and culture in relationship to LGBTIQ rights.

The film centres around Mwamba, a female-to-male trans-person living openly in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and follows Mwamba and his fellow activist-friends in their fight to create safe spaces and dialogue around a concept that is unknown to almost everyone in Tanzania.
SAME LOVE (REMIX)
(music video; Art Attack; Kenya 2015)
A Kenyan music video of an African-themed remix of American hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ marriage equality anthem "Same Love”: it became a song about LGBTIQ rights and struggles, gender equalities and civil liberties for all sexual orientations across Africa. It was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board in February 2016.
