WORD FACTORY PRESENTS:

2019/20 Short Story Course — Masterclass # 6

Touching the Funny-Bone with Ian Sansom.

‘There are those who, in their pride and their innocence, dedicate their careers to writing humorous pieces. Poor dears, the world is stacked against them from the start, fro everybody in it has the right to look at their work and say, “I don’t think that’s funny.”’
Dorothy Parker

In this masterclass we will examine one of literature’s greatest, slightest, strangest and most difficult forms – the humorous short story.

We will consider some classic and modern examples of the form – Borges, Lydia Davis, Helen Simpson, Etgar Keret, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, and others - and ask, what is the relationship between humour and jokes, between comedy and tragedy, and between brevity and wit? What is it that might make a short story humorous?

We will also examine other short humorous forms, including anecdotes, limericks, nonsense verse and jokes, in order to see what we can learn from them about the shape, pattern and function of the short story.

Ian Sansom is a writer, journalist and broadcaster, renowned for his literary brilliance and wit, which he deploys brilliantly in fiction and in criticism. He is the author of more than a dozen novels, including the Mobile Library series and the County Guide series, and is a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4. He writes for the Guardian, the Spectator, the New Statesman and the TLS. A former Director of the Oscar Wilde Centre at Trinity College Dublin, he is currently a Professor at Queen's University Belfast.

Class size limited to 25 places.
