Event description

Description

Are referendums the ruin of democracy or are they the only way to make big political decisions?

To tackle this question, join us on a journey through five referendums - on EEC membership in 1975, devolution in 1979 and 1997, independence in 2014 and EU membership in 2016. Participants will be encouraged to get hands on with the materials - assessing visual presentation, framing and messaging. We will examine each of the referendum campaigns and go onto explore the impact of these referendums on Scottish and British politics. The workshop will draw on the rich visual materials available from the Scottish Political Archive, including posters, pamphlets and leaflets.

Dr Coree Brown Swan is a Research Fellow at the Centre on Constitutional Change, with a focus on independence, self-government and constitutional change.
