Acting Through Song, with Justin Brett. “What is this song I am singing actually about? How do I find that and connect emotionally with it? How do I improvise beautiful, connected lyrics? How can I engage physically while I’m singing, and be more specific with movement? What do I do with my hands?!”
If you ever have these questions in your mind while improvising songs then come and spend half a day with the 'bonnet up' looking at useful ways to answer them. Aimed at the more experienced musical improviser, we’ll look at how to really drill down to the subject of your song - deepening rather than broadening, so we’re not just singing about ’stuff’. We’ll be looking at ways to connect emotionally, so we can make even a comic song more truthful, and therefore more impactful and funny; when we’re emotionally connected, we often find we don't need to make anything up - it’s already there! Also we will find ways to make your lyrics even more beautiful and, well, lyrical. We’ll have a brief look at how the style of a song can influence the improvised content. And finally we’ll be looking at physicality - specifically stillness, and how effective and nuanced just a small amount of movement can be.
No specific knowledge of musical theatre styles is necessary, but please feel free to listen to some MT songs beforehand.
