The Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly (VCSA) will be holding their Annual General Meeting 

on the 

17th May 2017

At 9am to 1pm

Council Chamber, Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shropshire, SY2 6ND

Representatives from the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE), public sector and private sector are invited to register their place at the event. 

The Agenda is currently being confirmed but here is some of what we will have instore for attendees:


  • The Highlights of 2016/17 (Speaker: Rachel Wintle, VCSA Chair)
  • Quick Fire Updates from Key Partners (Confirmed speakers: Clive Wright,Chief Executive at Shropshire Council; Sonia Roberts, VCSE Representative on the Marches Local Enterprise Board. Others TBC)
  • Guest Speaker: Helen Rice, CEO, Advising Communities (Presentation Topic: “The Changing Landscape – Finding Opportunities in a Difficult Funding Environment”)
  • Big Lottery Presentation and Workshop—TBC
  • Shropshire Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly Board Refresh - Interactive session with attendees (Speaker: Chris Child)
  • VCSA Board Handover of Chair 

There will also be plenty of opportunity for attendees to network and some extra activities to provide feedback.  We hope to see as many members at the event as possible. Papers for the event will be available on the Shropshire Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly website ( at the beginning of May 2017. 


Guest Speaker Bio:

Helen Rice is presently Chief Executive of Advising Communities a leading independent legal advice and education charity supporting individuals and organisations, with a wide range of support and legal advice services to alleviate poverty and support communities across the UK. Previously Helen was Director of Learning and Development with the Directory of Social Change a national organisation helping voluntary sector organisations become effective agents for social change. Helen led their vast array of learning programmes including training, conferences, consultancy, coaching and fundraising support.

Helen is presently chair of Grace Eyre a large learning disabilities charity and the Migrant Resource Centre a leading national migrants support charity. Helen previously chaired Community Action Southwark for three years and the Women’s Resource Centre for 4 years which provides a national voice for women’s organisations, helping to creating a strong and vibrant women’s sector by campaigning and supporting these essential organisations across the UK.

Helen was formerly Director of Development and the Regions for Community Matters developing their successful Consultancy and Training business and has worked for a variety of givers, influencers and deliverers including the BIG lottery, the Charity Commission and the Charity Law Unit at the University of Liverpool. Helen has also been a consultant and trainer on a vast array of governance and leadership subjects and lectures at Birkbeck University on their Voluntary Sector Management undergraduate programme. Helen is FRSA and is leading innovations in the development of digital tools for communities across the UK.


Important Information for Attendees:

Venue: Council Chamber, Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 2QA. The Council Chamber is on the 1st floor, there is a lift that can be used once you are in the building. If you are using a wheelchair and wish to attend the lift dimensions are 91cm (2.9ft) wide and 94.5cm deep (3.1ft).  In the event of an emergency evacuation the right hand lift in the main stairwell is fire proofed; trained lift wardens are in place to help anyone with mobility needs to evacuate the building safely. 

Parking: There is very limited parking at Shirehall.  Please car share where possible (a full list of attendees will be available on the Eventbrite page so keep checking back to see if you know anyone you can share a lift with.) Further details for disabled parking/blue badge holders and other travel options will be provided in your booking confirmation/eventbrite ticket email. 

Registration: Please ensure you register on arrival; the registration desk will be located outside of the Council Chamber. If you need to use the lift, please inform reception staff on arrival so they may grant you access (you may need to sign in as a visitor).

Hearing Loop: There is a working hearing loop in Shirehall; if you wish to use this facility please collect the equipment from Shirehall reception on your way in to the building and please ensure this is returned when you leave.

Refreshments - Complimentary tea and coffee will be available for attendees. Water jugs and glasses will also be provided. Refreshments will be served from 9am in the Foyer outside the Council Chamber. The Column Restaurant is available to purchase refreshments from 9 a.m and breakfast/snacks etc.  Lunch is served from 12-2pm; a variety of hot and cold food is available.
