Description

Dear all,

Please join us for our next Shut-up and Write session on Wednesday 27th April 2016, at 1-4pm in P233 (2nd floor, Parkside building).

At these monthly gatherings, we engage with a curated list of texts, including but not limited to excerpts from PhD student work, staff and researchers publications and major theoretical texts in the field. We mainly spend the session writing, then reflect collectively on the experience, share writing tips and discuss the main issues we all faced through the writing process.

Here's the schedule for our next session:

1.00-1.30: An ethical praxis for conducting media research? Rethinking representation, consent, agency and security in the new media age

A short presentation by Dima Saber. Building on her experience working with citizen footage smuggled on a hard drive from Syria, Dima Saber will give a short presentation on the main ethical challenges facing researchers, archivists and media professionals when working with amateur media content available through online media networks.

1.30-2.00: BCU & Ethics

What the institution tells us we should do, what we know about conducting ‘ethical media research’ and the important things that we should keep in mind.

2.00-3.30: Shut-up & Write

Writing a 250 words response to Sam Gregory's Cameras Everywhere: Ubiquitous Video Documentation of Human Rights, New Forms of Video Advocacy, and Considerations of Safety, Security, Dignity and Consent published by Journal of Human Rights Practice in Oxford Journals.

This journal article is available in PDF online here.

3.30-4.00: Group discussion

Reading each others work, commenting, discussing main challenges reaching the 250 words limit in an hour, and sharing best practices

Register here or get in touch if you're interested in joining us by emailing ShutupandWriteBCU@gmail.com. Also, look out for our live-tweets on #ShutupandWriteBCU about this series in the next few weeks.
