Event description
Discussion of care for women with SCD from conception, through pregnancy, birth and the puerperium.

About this Event

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most common inherited diseases worldwide. In the UK, where an estimated 15,000 individuals are affected with the disease, there are over 109 pregnancies in women with SCD annually. Pregnancy in women with SCD is high risk with increased risk of maternal and perinatal mortality as well as sickle-related complications (pain crises, pulmonary complications, infection), pregnancy related complications (proteinuric hypertension, venous thrombosis, caesarean delivery) and perinatal complications (intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth and low birth weight).

This study day will provide a comprehensive overview for those who wish to learn more about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and its implications in Maternity Care. It is suitable for Midwives, Students, Nurses, Doctors and associated Health Care Providers. Hosted by Professor Eugene Oteng-Ntim and the team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, the speakers are prominent experts in the field and the following topics will be included:

• Overview of Sickle Cell Disease & Pain Management

• Preconception and Pre –implantation screening

• Screening and Diagnosis

• Sickle Cell Disease Research

• Sickle Cell Nursing, Community and Midwifery Care

• Obstetric, Intrapartum and Postnatal Care
