Background to the Side by Side project
In September 2014, the Big Lottery Fund awarded Mind £3.2 million to improve access to peer support across England as part of a two-year programme called Side by Side.
The aim of the project was to:
build an evidence base for the effectiveness of one to one, group and online peer support
promote the value of peer support to people with experience of mental health problems, service providers and commissioners.
The Side by Side programme has a key aim to improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems across England through access to peer support. Mind awarded 37 grants to local peer support projects across nine pilot areas in England, of which Plymouth was one of these area. The projects supported people with mental health problems, as well as helping to research the effectiveness of peer support.
