    Description

Human Resource professionals: What can security incident information do for you and your staff?

Improve your prevention and learning by better managing and using incident information in your daily-work.

Security-related incidents put the lives of aid workers and aid recipients at risk in addition to disrupting the flow of assistance to disaster-affected populations. The information we receive when dealing with all types of incidents is critical for supporting a timely and effective response, as well as for learning and preventing similar incidents in the future. This information should also be used by NGOs to better understand their context of operations, and take evidence-based decisions at a more strategic level.

This training recognises the integral role HR plays in managing incident information and looks at how informative incident information can be to enable a good response, prevent future incidents, spot trends and make better strategic decisions. By using the data to spot trends and implement changes to employment practices which support the health, safety and wellbeing of employees, HR and security staff will be able to communicate and collaborate in ensuring incident information is used to its full potential.

    Aim of the training:

The aim of this training is to provide participants with an understanding of the importance of information arising from incidents, learn how to use the data available to strengthen their organisation’s preparedness and response to incidents involving their employees, and consider how this data could be beneficial to the wider NGO community.

    Who is this training for?

This session is most suitable for HR professionals involved with dealing with all staff affected by many different types of incidents.

    Objectives of the training:

It is anticipated that participants who successfully complete the training will:

    • Have a common understanding of the principles on which lie the foundations of incident information management, using the Security Incident Information Management (SIIM) handbook.
    • Understand how to use data to make better decisions and strengthen their organisation’s preparedness, response and learning for all types of incidents
    • Have explored the different stages of the employment cycle and illustrated how incident information can strengthen recruitment, induction, informed consent, day-to-day management, stress management and transition practices
    • Define the role of HR and different stakeholders in SIIM and the importance of coordination between stakeholders when managing incident information.
    • Introduce and discuss the mechanisms required for strengthening information management in their organisation and the role of HR within it.

Participants will also be able to:

    • Engage with and related to professionals from various disciplines in an incident situation
    • Use tools and mechanisms to analyse data and spot trends
    • Identify and use triggers for changes to strengthen the health, safety and wellbeing of employees
    • Advocate and promote good incident information management for organisational buy-in
    • Explore how incident information can benefit the wider aid community
    • Demonstrate their learning by applying the principles of information management and SIIM tools to a case study in a group activity.

    Learning methods

This 3-hour training will be split into three 45 minute sessions, with a 15-30 minute break between sessions 1 and 2. This format encourages participants to reflect and apply their learning using tools and by taking part in a group case study exercise.

    • 3 hours, delivered at 1pm GMT - 4pm GMT the 6 February and 6 March 2018 Select one date.
    • Delivered online for maximum convenience
    • Participatory approach involving group work, live presentations and discussion
    • Training and reading material will be provided 2 weeks before the training commences
    • Session content, discussions, polls and multiple choice questions with group work will reinforce participant’s knowledge, skills and competencies on: collection, reporting, recording, analysis, use, and sharing of incident information.

    Link with the SIIM project:

This course forms part of the broader programme on Security Incident Information Management (SIIM) project funded by ECHO. The project has included the development of the SIIM handbook, training and coaching for Security Focal Points as well as this series of trainings on incident information and analysis for other technical specialists within the sector. The aim of these trainings within the broader project is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of security incident information across the organisation and allow all types of staff to be able to identify the information that is useful and access the information and analysis they require to fulfil their roles.

The programme is linked with the incident database run by Insecurity Insight which allows NGOs to share incident information between organisations at a global level, allowing for improved analysis for evidence based decision making.
