Event description

Description

Kinetika invites you to join us for a ten–day performative walk along the River Thames as part of Silk River. This ambitious project explores the unique relationship between London and Kolkata through artistic exchange between communities along the Thames Estuary and India’s Hooghly River.

A team of artists led by Kinetika’s director, Ali Pretty, has been working with communities along the way to devise a series of unique walking events that will reveal the stories of those who live and work on the river and the connections they have with parallel communities living alongside the Hooghly in West Bengal.

Each community has created a 6m hand-painted silk scroll that is a visual narrative of their walk. Every day a core group will welcome 2 new scrolls, one from the River Thames community and one from the Indian partner location, to be carried by participants from Kew Gardens to Southend where there will be a finale moment as we walk all 20 to the end of the mile-long pier.

The journey will be full of surprises, you can join for a morning, an afternoon, one or ten days and every day we will reveal more stories online, so you can experience and interact with us wherever you are.

Silk River will continue and culminate with a ten-day journey along the river Hooghly 7-17 Dec 2017. Contact jo@kinetika.co.uk if you’re interested in taking part.

East London’s Silk Trail – Tower Hamlets

Follow the silk trail in Tower Hamlets and join the Council’s ‘A’ Team Arts for a day of performances at six historic locations. We trace the footsteps of migrant Huguenot silk weavers through the grand houses in Fournier St, past the rag traders in Brick Lane and on to the park dedicated to the memory of Altab Ali – a symbol of the anti-racism movement. At the site of the “Strangers’ Home” learn about the lives of the East India Company lascars and their protests, and visit the church of the East India Company. We will weave their stories together through textiles, and performances from today’s younger generation of these aspirational communities.

9.30 a.m. Start at Christ Church, Commercial Street, Spitalfields

1.15 – 2.15 p.m. Lunch at St Anne’s Church, Commercial Road, Limehouse. Lunch is not provided, please bring a picnic. You may wish to take a local bus from Mulberry School to St Anne's Church.

5 p.m. Finish at Museum of London Docklands
