Description

As part of our #SilverCityStramash, Pat Ballantyne, of the Elphinstone Institute at The University of Aberdeen, will deliver a talk entitled Highland Dancing – Untwisting the Myths.

There is a commonly held belief that Highland dancing is as old as the hills. Stories range from the suggestion that the Highland Fling was inspired by the capers of the stag, or that it was a battle dance which was performed on a shield or targe. It has been suggested that the Sword Dance dates back to the time of Malcolm Canmore in the 11th century and the Sean Triubhas represents the Highlander kicking off the trews imposed upon him post Culloden. These romantic stories embed this style of dancing in the history and culture of the Highlands but are they a part of the real history?
I will use just one of these dances – the Highland Fling – to trace this history. Beginning with steps described by the eighteenth-century Aberdeen dancing master, Francis Peacock, I will explain how the dance has evolved from improvisational roots to a standardised and competitive style of dancing.

The is a free event but tickets must be reserved using the eventbrite link in the ticket section of this event. For more on our programme see https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/scottish-culture-and-traditions-scampt-13556050726
