About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Hiking

Start point: Stock Lane LDNPA car park, Grasmere

Length: 8.6 km (5.3 miles) with 455m (1490ft) of ascent

Time: 5 hours (approx.)

Walk grade: 5 (see grade description below)

A challenging walk beginning in Grasmere, where William Wordsworth is buried, then climbing to the summit of Silver How (395m and one of the Wainwright fells) with views over Grasmere Lake before continuing to Swinescar Pike with a panoramic view of the Langdale Pikes. The route then returns to Grasmere by a lower path.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that will be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There is a long initial ascent which is steep in places followed by a ridgewalk which includes several short steep descents and one exposed section and there are gates and stiles on the route.

Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.

Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.

This walk will be led by trainees undergoing assessment to become walk leaders. The leaders will be accompanied by experienced assessors and this shouldn't affect your experience on the walk.
